Materials become part of a routine: touched, opened, cleaned and seen in light that keeps changing. Choosing them calls for attention to that experience, not only to the first impression in a photograph.
Start from how the room is used
A kitchen worktop, bedroom panelling and a family room floor each have a different job. Describe your habits: how often you cook, whether there are young children or pets, and what kind of upkeep feels comfortable to you.
Use those needs to discuss with your designer which materials suit. Ask for usage and care information for the products actually chosen. The name of a material alone does not describe the full character of a product.
See samples with the room's light and colours
Reference photos help convey a mood, but a screen is no substitute for a physical sample. Place several options side by side with the wall colours, fabrics and other elements that will be used.
Watch how the samples look under lighting close to that of the real room. Discuss, too, the direction of the pattern, where surfaces meet and the variation in appearance your chosen material may show before you approve installation.
Notice the parts that are not the focus of the photo
Corner junctions, the gaps between doors, panel edges and the position of hardware all shape the final impression. Ask for details or samples of workmanship for the parts that matter, especially on custom-made furniture.
Try to picture everyday movements: opening a drawer, reaching into storage, switching on a light. A conversation about materials is more complete when it covers construction, mechanisms and how each element is installed.
Choose as one composition
Not every surface has to be the centre of attention. Decide on the main element of the room, then choose supporting materials that serve it. Colour, texture, proportion and lighting can be discussed as a single composition.
Keep the approved specifications and samples as the reference for the work. Quiet luxury comes from decisions that suit the life of the owner, then are carried out with care.
